I love clothes. What girl doesn't, but what I love more than clothes is finding great deals and saving money without sacrificing getting what I want! One great way to do so is to make things yourself.

I was shopping the other day for a dress to wear to a wedding. I wanted something that had color but since stores are now getting ready for fall, it was a tough find. I ended up finding a dress but it was grey. To add some color I thought it would be a great idea to find a Kimono to go over it to add a little detail and color to the outfit. As I searched through the stores I realized that they were more than I felt like spending at the moment and they looked to easy to make. I went into forever 21 and was browsing around and I came across the scarf section of the store. I found really pretty patterned scarves and decided I would use one to make my own Kimono. The scarf only cost me $9.00 (compared to a $30 or $40 dollar Kimono you can find in stores). I was so excited to take advantage of the find.

Making the Kimono was super easy all you need is

  • A square scarf (Forever 21 has many patterns and they are very inexpensive and a perfect size!)
  • Some thread
  • A needle
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (I found a yard stick to be easier)

First I laid the scarf out on the floor, then I folded it in half.

Next, take a ruler and measure 10 inches from the top where the fabric is folded. This will be your sleeve for the Kimono. Then, I marked the area with a pin on both sides.

Then taking the needle and thread I started hand sewing the side of the fabric down to the bottom.

After sewing down you should have a sleeve that looks something like this:)

Next taking the Yard stick you are going to measure to the  middle of the scarf and cut down the middle to create the opening of the Kimono. Once it is cut just fold the edged of each side and sew them to create a nicer looking seam so it won't fray. When I was finished I decided I wanted my Kimono a little bit shorter so I cut and sewed the bottom of mine to make it the length I desired.

Here's how I styled my Kimono for a wedding:
