DIY Camera Strap
12/17/2014
Hey guys! I absolutely love this DIY Camera Strap. It's so cute and I think it would make such a cute gift for a photographer friend or even someone who loves to travel and takes a lot of pictures! You can really customize this to whoever you are giving it to by using their favorite colors and different patterns! It is so inexpensive to make. It only costs about a $3 to make.
What You Will Need:
- Just as a side note you can buy the cotton webbing at fabric stores by the yard. Its about a $1.30 per yard, so really inexpensive. I got three yards and it will make about 3 straps. I don't know exactly how much I used for the strap I made, I measured it to my old camera strap to get the right length.
You will also need some masking or painters tape.
First thing to do it to start putting the tape in the design you would like. I chose to do straight lines, diagonal lines, and triangles. I started with sections and worked my way up the strap because I waited for parts to dry before putting tape over parts I already painted. This will make more sense as you get going.
Once you have some tape started you can start painting, using as many colors as you would like. I used shades of coral and I did a pop of black in a few sections. I found it easiest to use foam brushes and kind of stamp the paint on. When I did this technique I noticed that the lines were more crisp on the edges. You can sort of go crazy with this part and make it look however you want doing different things as you go along.
Then once you have finished painting the whole strap wait for it to dry before you assemble it.
To assemble, grab your swivel hook and feed the strap through so that the extra bit will be on the backside of the strap. Then just add some glue and hold it tightly in place. Let this dry for a few hours before you mess with it and let dry for 24 hours before you put in on the camera just to make sure that everything is secure (drying time will depend on what fabric glue you use).
After mine dried for a couple hours I went back in and used a needle and thread and did a couple of stitches just to make sure that it was really secure since it will be holding a nice heavy camera. I used invisible thread for this (clear thread) so it wouldn't be noticeable but you could use thread that matched with your color scheme and that would be cute also!
